Roundtable talk with Laura Binggeli, Pablo Lerma, Tim Rod and Tara Ulman, moderated by Jana J. Haeckel

The family album has been considered the photographic memory of families since the 19th century. It helps us understand where we come from, tells and reminds us of our ‘own history’. At the same time, it often follows the social standards of the common image of ‘father, mother, child’. Which social ideas and clichés dominate the image of ‘family’ in amateur photography? How can worn-out narratives be subverted and redefined? And what role does a photographic search for traces play in finding one’s ‘own history’? Taking into account the different artistic strategies in dealing with family images, the discussion will look at the works of some of the participants of the Prix Photoforum 2021. Central to this is the examination of the archive, the question of inclusion and exclusion criteria of common image narratives and the search for new identities beyond the dominant canon.
