Workshop with Marco Frauchiger

Marco Frauchiger’s long-term project “Bringing Light into the Dark”, carried out in Laos – for which he received the Photoforum Prize in 2022- was born out of a dialogue with the local population and asks subtle questions about the promise of reality propagated by photojournalism and war reporting. His work adopts a self-reflexive perspective by asking how the photographic medium is materially and ideologically implicated in environmental change, with the aim of minimising its ecological footprint in production.

The central question of the workshop is how the camera can be used as a tool to break with colonial and imperialist modes of narration, without forgetting its own responsibilities. New forms of documentary narratives and imagine ethical image practices in terms of narrative and material production will be discussed.

The workshop is aimed at photographers, artists and students who wish to deepen their questions and knowledge about documentary and artistic image practice. After a brief theoretical introduction and a presentation of Marco Frauchiger’s artistic work, participants will have the opportunity to discuss their own work in a group.

Registration fee: CHF 50 / CHF 30 for Photoforum members, to be brought in cash on the day of the course.
